Brevard County: My Favorite things!

I saw another blog about things to do around town and figured I would share some of my favorite things about Brevard County. I have lived in Brevard since 6th grade, so I am pretty close to being a native. I realize that there are many non-local students at Florida Tech, so maybe I can help them discover some new places and new things to do for fun.

Best Beach

Sebastian Inlet State Park: By far the best beach in Brevard County is the beach at Sebastian Inlet State Park. The water is crystal blue and you can do everything there! The Inlet is probably the best surf spot in the county and also one of the best spots for fishing. They have a boat ramp, shallow swimming area for kids, bike trails, snorkeling, diving, and so much more.

Best Shopping

Downtown Divas: I try and avoid the mall at all costs, I prefer a more mellow shopping experience. One of my favorites is Downtown Divas located in Historic Downtown Melbourne. Divas is great for party dresses and unique clothing items. They have a great selection of jeans and cute tops for going out on the town. Divas is strictly for the ladies, you won’t find any men’s clothing here.

MTB Surf Emporium: MTB in Indialantic is a great place to shop for everyday beach clothes. They have the best selection of bathing suits, board-shorts, shorts, tank tops, sun dresses and accessories all for pretty reasonable prices. They cater to men and women; MTB also carries surfboards, skateboards, shoes, and accessories.

Longboard House: Another favorite for beach gear is Longboard House on 5th Ave. in Indialantic. I buy a new bathing suit every year at the Longboard House 50% off sale, they always have great suits for an awesome price. Longboard House also has a huge selection of surfboards, paddle-boards, skateboards and more. They have a great selection of men’s and women’s clothing and sandals as well.

Best Restaurants

Da Kine Diegos: There are plenty of great places to eat in Brevard County, one of my favorites is Da Kine Diegos in Satellite Beach. It looks like a shack, but has great food and I love the atmosphere! All of the seating is outdoors, it very beachy and has a mellow surf vibe.  My favorite menu item is the Chicken Gringo, I don’t think I have ever ordered anything different because I like it so much. Da Kine is a great place if you are on a budget.

Matt’s Casbah: If you are looking for something a little nicer, try Matt’s Casbah in Historic Downtown Melbourne. They have a wide range of menu items including fresh seafood and sushi; I love their salads. they also have a great outdoor bar/patio area, it’s a great place to people watch and listen to live music.

Siam Orchid: I am obsessed with sushi and have had sushi at pretty much every sushi place in the area. My favorite is Siam Orchid in Melbourne, they have a huge selection of rolls, my personal fave is the Sea Of Love roll. Thai Thai II in Indialantic is also great, sit at the sushi bar and get a free appetizer from the sushi chefs!

Nightlife

Historic Downtown Melbo urne: There are a variety of bars, restaurants, and clubs all within walking distance of each other in Downtown Melbourne. Mainstreet Pub is a local favorite with weekly specials and moderately priced drinks and food. If you like house music check out Foo Bar and the newest downtown spot, G Ultra Lounge. Off the Traxx is a more low key environment with a full menu, pool tables, and live music on the weekends.

Sand on the Beach: This restaurant and bar is located on the corner of Ocean Ave. and A1A in Melbourne Beach. It is a great spot to spend your afternoon overlooking the beach and also a cool place to hang out at night.

Doubles: Located off South Patrick Dr. in Satellite Beach, this restaurant and bar has great sandwiches and is a great place to watch sports. They have pool tables, the drinks and food are pretty cheap, and they have tons of flat screens for watching sports.

Captain Hiram’s: Directly overlooking the Indian River, Hiram’s is a great place to hang out day or night. They offer docks for patrons who arrive by boat and they even have their own hotel on premises. They have a stage with live music and sometimes get some really great acts, I saw Unwritten Law at Captain Hiram’s, it was great because it is a small venue with no assigned seating, standing only.
