Academic Support Center – CRLA Certified!

The Academic Support Center’s tutor training program, the Peer Tutoring Practicum, is now certified by the College Reading and Learning Association.

At the ASC, we like to think of this as a Really Big Deal.

The College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) is a national organization that certifies private tutoring programs to award their tutors a Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3 certificate. For 2014, the ASC is certified for Level 1. Currently, 23 peer tutors are in the process of completing their certification. ASC peer tutors go through a training program that includes monthly meetings, peer evaluations, online discussions, and modules related to learning theory. In addition to maintaining a 3.0 GPA and a grade of A or B in the courses they tutor, ASC peer tutors must complete Level 1 certification as part of their employment. This ensures that anyone who comes to the Academic Support Center for assistance can get help from a trained peer tutor. As an added bonus, this certification helps the ASC peer tutors when they leave Florida Tech, as the CRLA certification is recognized worldwide.

In the coming year, we’ll work toward creating the material and training syllabus for our Level 2 certification. If students are interested in becoming certified peer tutors, they can enroll in the ASC 2001 Peer Tutoring Practicum course in the Spring 2015 semester. A student who successfully completes this one-credit course will earn a CRLA Level 1 certification. For more information, students should contact Veronica Giguere, ASC Associate Director, at vgiguere@fit.edu.
