Marine and Environmental Science Camp: Benthic Communities

Today the Marine and Environmental Science campers explored the diversity of several marine benthic communities: seagrass beds, mangrove habits, sandy beaches, and hard substrates. They learned how to use both seine and dip nets to catch fish around seagrass beds. They caught many small juvenile fish, including an angelfish! Campers also explored the swash zone on the beaches, hunting for both mole crabs and coquina clams. Finally, the marine and environmental science campers helped identify organisms that live on hard bottoms: sea lettuce, sea quirts, pistal shrimp, spiny lobster, barnacles, and tube worms.
