Frequently Asked Questions About Florida Tech’s Computer Science Program

As a student earning a computer science degree, I get asked a lot of questions about the program from family, friends and prospective students. So here are my answers to these frequently asked questions:

1. Why did you choose computer science?
I chose computer science because I feel that everything and everyone revolves around technology. It has become our past, present and future. I want to be a part of that future and change the lives of many around the world.

2. Is computer science all about programming?
Many people have the understanding that computer science is all about programming. In reality, it’s quite the opposite. Although there is programming involved, it is more intellectual problem-solving, rather than coding. It involves coming together as teams and applying logic to seek solutions.

3. Are there any research opportunities?
YES! The amount of data you can study in computer science is phenomenal. There is always an area of research that needs undergraduate and graduate students. The Florida Tech Department of Computer Sciences hires students to perform research activities throughout their years. These opportunities sometimes lead to full-time jobs upon graduation. Here are a few highlighted computer science projects.

4. Do you have to be good at math and physics?
Yes and no. You have to be able to understand the fundamentals. But if you put in the hard work, there is nothing to stop you from learning what you need to know in this field. Knowing these subjects will be helpful when it comes to programming and its theories.

5. Are there any fun courses you can take?
Definitely! Right now I am taking Introduction to Game Design, which I find extremely fun. Our project is to develop a game on a platform of our choice. The best part of the program is that you have a set of electives that you are allowed to choose from as well as free electives. This allows you to branch out and try other fields of study. I have taken courses in business and ocean engineering. During my time in ocean engineering, my team was able to build an ROV and we got to go out and drive it around. How cool is that?
