What does Florida Tech offer biological science majors?

It’s time for me to talk to some of the prospective biological science majors. It’s getting down to that point where college decisions are going to need to be made. You’re probably at that point where you’re weighing your options about programs and professors and class sizes: basically all of the important things that marine biology (or any biology major) should know.

What do you get at Florida Tech?

You get time. Time is one of the most valuable things that a student can have. Florida Tech has incredible professors that are involved in pretty amazing research projects, and you have the time to meet with them, bounce ideas off of them, learn from them and assist them in their research.

You get attention. Florida Tech isn’t a giant school. My largest class is a lecture of about 30 people. The professors know you by your name and are readily available during office hours or by appointment to speak with you and give you extra help if you need it.

You get experience. As a science major, one of the most important things that a company is going to be looking at when you graduate is how much experience you have in your field of interest. Florida Tech is a great place to study marine biology as well as other biological sciences. For you prospective students up north, I went to school in Maine last year… I know how it feels to wade through hip deep water during the winter. Florida Tech is not only in a perfect location, but they have the resources to get you the opportunities that you want/need to succeed in your field. The professors here are always looking for volunteers to go out on research projects with them or other students (masters and doctoral candidates), which gets you experience. The biology department also has several work study jobs where you can be a research assistant and get paid! Every professor on campus is unique in their interests and they all have different connections to get you into field work. If you know what you want, they’ll help you. If you don’t know what they want, they’ll suggest ideas based on your interests. The Florida Tech faculty is able to personalize with their students in a way that is attributable to the small class sizes.
