Oh, the Possibilities

One of the benefits of the music industry is that there are so many different types of jobs to choose from. Whether you want to travel the world or stay in a cubicle, there is a job fit for every music fan looking to work in the business. Eventually, I would like to be an A&R (artists and repertoire) executive, which essentially means I would be one of the people in charge of scouting potential artists and working with them to develop them and their careers.

While that is my eventual goal, there are other positions in the industry that I am interested in. Here is a brief glimpse into some of them.

Artist manager – As an artist manager, I would be in charge of booking gigs and events and essentially handling the affairs of the artist, in terms of their career.

Event manager – With this job, it would be my responsibility to ensure that all concerts and events run as smoothly and successfully as possible.

Marketing Analyst – Here I would take a look at the numbers coming in from album and ticket sales and the response from different artist marketing campaigns to see if they are working and selling as well as they should be.

Road/Tour Manager – Now this would be a fun job. As a road manager, I would join acts on tour, schedule their daily events, and make sure everyone is where they need to be at all times.

Obviously these are only a few of the options available, but they are some of the ones that I find most interesting. I like the idea of knowing that there is a realm of possibility, and that if I do not like working in one part, I can always move to something else in the industry.
