Joining a Florida Tech Sorority
Last year, I would never have pictured myself as a Greek. I was never one to bond with girls at all. I knew that I was already too busy for my own good. Nevertheless, something in me changed over last summer. When I returned home from Europe, I found myself a completely different person. I was more ready to try new things than ever before. So when I received an email inviting me to sorority recruitment, I thought that I might give it a try.
Unfortunately, I was already booked that week before school started, since I was a Panther Prep Leader assigned to work with the new students for Orientation. Talk about hitting the ground running!
Me being me, I decided that I was totally capable of running from Orientation events to recruitment events and then back again. But that plan was foiled when I accidently gave myself a concussion on the first day and had to spend my free time resting.
I realized how much Greek life meant to me when my stomach dropped at the idea of not being able to go through recruitment. As I watched my Facebook feed fill up with pictures, congratulatory messages and excited statuses, I started to regret not pushing myself through recruitment.
On the first day of classes, two of my friends showed up to class in matching bid day shirts gushing on everything that had happened that week. The next thing I knew, I was joined in the conversation, and I soon started meeting more and more of my friends’ sisters. They weren’t what I had expected at all, and I found myself coming out of my shell like never before. I really enjoyed the time I spent with them – it was the perfect way to relax after a long day.
One day, two of the girls showed up at my door with a snap bid for me. Even though I didn’t officially go through recruitment, they wanted me to join their sorority. My heart leapt and I accepted immediately. I was initiated into the sisterhood in the fall, which has is now a major event in my life. The girl that never got along with girls suddenly had 30+ sisters who loved her.
So far, I’m found the Greek community to be amazing. I love the sense of camaraderie that exists not only within the fraternities and sororities themselves, but also between all of us as a whole. It is truly a privilege to be part of a group of such intelligent, kind, involved individuals who have nothing but friendship to share.
Many people have misconceptions about what being Greek means, but I can tell you this: I was one of the biggest skeptics in the world about Greek life, but I have ended loving it like nothing else. As usual, taking a chance and stepping outside of my comfort zone paid off in a big way. Florida Tech may be a small school, but our Greek life is just as lively as anywhere else. In fact, being at a small school means that all of the Greeks know each other and spend a lot of time hanging out or collaborating on projects. I can’t wait to see what else is in store for me as a sorority sister.
