Florida Tech Explores the Sea!
Back in September, I spoke about how important it is to join clubs and to have fun on campus. Throughout my posts I’ve constantly referenced Tri Beta (the biological Honor Society) and the Marine Biological Society, two organizations that I have taken part in from the very beginning of the school year.
Last semester Tri Beta did some pretty cool things, such as building oyster mats and the Marine Biological Society volunteered at the president’s picnic. Tri Beta also tried to put on a fishing trip, which, because of high seas, was pushed off until January 15th, 2011.
Waking up at 5:00 in the morning on a Sunday is probably not the most appealing idea for any college student, regardless of their major, but on January 15th, 65 Florida Tech students, woke up before sunrise and met at the Clemente Center, ready to depart to Cape Canaveral for their fishing excursion. Once everyone had paired up with a driver, the Tri Beta sponsored fishing group reconvened at the docks, ready to get out to sea.
Deep-sea fishing can be expensive, but the good thing about going to Florida Tech is that they put on different trips for less money than they would usually cost (always a bonus for college students).
The boat left the dock at about 7:30am and we were at our fishing spot at around 9:30 am. Once the boat anchored, the waves really started moving us around, but that did not stop some people as they proceeded to catch Sea Bass and other large fish to cook up for dinner.
The fishing only lasted until about 12:15pm or so because the waves started to cause a little bit of an issue for about half of the boat, causing the boat to head back to port. Even though the day ended early, everyone still had a lot of fun and it was great to get away from campus for a few hours.
