Climbing into the Club Scene

(That’s me, on Florida Tech College Radio)

My first understanding of college was that I was going to do homework, go to class, eat something semi-edible, do more homework, call my parents so they know I’m alive and MAYBE get some sleep. This is was what I expected my days to be like, especially as a flight major. As it turns out, this is so far from the truth. Yes, I do all of it, but I’m also involved in clubs and organizations, most of which I am involved in purely because I enjoy them. I’ll go over the two that I’m involved in most, but you can find the full list of the official organizations on campus on here.

Florida Tech College Radio:

A buddy and I were talking one evening with some friends when it was mentioned out of the blue, “Y’all should get a radio show. It would be hilarious!” Very funny, yadda yadda, that will never happen. Two weeks later we find out there’s actually a student run radio station on campus called FTCR (Florida Tech College Radio – Facebook Link) and there were spots available for radio shows. It really couldn’t be an easier decision. Another two weeks later we were trained and broadcasting live to the world, as it is an online-only radio station so the entire internet population can listen in. We started out with our first show, called The Skinny, which was a huge success. Since then, we have moved on to other bigger and better things. I am now part of the show called Life, Dreams and Everything in Between, originally created by three of my friends. I’ve also moved up executively and am now the president of the station. It’s crazy what can happen in only a year. We have 6 shows and continue to grow. Every student at FIT has an option to host their very own show!

Florida Tech Climbing and Bouldering

I just joined this club at the beginning of the Spring 2012 semester and it has been so worth it. Coming from having never climbed before, this was a brand new experience for me. In the last 3 months I’ve become part of the school’s club team and traveled to competitions throughout Florida to compete with other Colleges around the southeastern region. It’s super rewarding as far as strength goes and even mental strength. As a stress relieving activity it’s perfect. Go to the gym with the friends, climb for hours, learn new moves and overcome your own weaknesses to finish a problem or run, then come back and get down to schoolwork.

Other than just these two clubs there are all kinds. We have political groups, gaming groups, scientific groups in all majors, flight groups and even art-based clubs. There are so many options, it’s really impossible to not get involved. In your first year at FIT you will want to join at least one, but if you are anything like me, you’ll want to join more.
