Free and at your Fingertips– The Digital Public Library of America

By Rebecca Weber

A new project, the Digital Public Library of America, launched on April 18, 2013.  The goal of this project is to bring together libraries and universities from across the nation to provide a huge open-access resource of images and text detailing American history and life. Major players include the Library of CongressHathiTrust, and the Internet Archive.

Features of the site include an interactive timeline that brings up all results for a particular time period, a map that brings up digital artifacts by location, a keyword search, and even a collection of digital exhibitions on topics like Activism in America and The Great Depression.  The DPLA isn’t just for searching. Would you like to build an app?  You can do that using DPLA’s content and their open API.
