Walk-A-Thon For A New Heart: Getting to Know Marie

Guest Blogger: Kaylin Jaichon, Nathan M. Bisk College of Business student

Just 2 more days until the big event! Today, I want to take advantage of the opportunity to share more in depth personal information about the subject of our event, Marie. I was able to have a brief interview with Marie about her perspective on the walkathon, as well as how her illness has affected her volunteer work in Haiti. The following are questioned answered by Marie:

1) What does the walkathon mean to you?

The walkathon means that we, as people, are connected to each other. And when one is in need, others should come together to help. I am so grateful to the Florida Tech community for their concern and support. My whole life, I have dedicated time and effort to help those that are in need, and I feel by now receiving help from other that is was really worth it. A helper can become anytime the one who needs help and I thank the Lord for putting so many people together to help save my life.

2) Did you expect the quantity of support and prayers people have given you?

I’ve never thought that so many people would offer their support. This is definitely a God sent thing and I am grateful to God and everyone who is helping. Thank you again to everyone! May the Lord richly bless you!

3) How has your illness has affected your work with women in Haiti?

After the January earthquake in Haiti, I worked with ladies who were living under tents. They are now trainers at the Feminine Training Center which I started in 1989. I wish I could be there to continue with the recruiting. I hope that the ladies that I trained keep on doing a good job at helping others. I taught them not only a profession but also values of life such as how and why they should be generous. I think that my illness is a message to them as to how life can turn around anytime. Our life is not in our hand; therefore, whenever we can, we must be of help to someone else
